A Day in My Life as a Business Developer in the Supply Team: Conversations with Thibaut Goncalves
Ever wondered what a day in my life as a business developer in the world of Fish-Tech looks like? Let me take you through my busy yet fascinating daily routine. My role involves interacting with suppliers, ensuring our platform has the most attractive offers, and ultimately driving sales. Here’s a glimpse into my day:
Early Morning: Focusing on Diversity
The first two hours of my day are all about diversity. I aim to secure as many offers as possible for the seafood products I oversee. This involves calling each supplier individually to request offers for specific products missing from our platform. During these calls, I exchange valuable information about market trends, weather conditions, supply levels, and potential opportunities with suppliers. These insights are crucial for understanding how the market will evolve and identifying good opportunities. I also share data with suppliers on how they can optimise their offers to increase their sales.
Morning Commercial Team Meeting
After the initial supplier calls, I head to the morning commercial team meeting. Here, we exchange information with the demand team on current market trends, which helps guide my day and understand what products are in demand. The focus is on identifying opportunities, such as a good price in the marketplace or the arrival of a product in short supply. When there’s a lack of a specific product, and an offer comes through, it’s a golden opportunity because no one else will have it. The demand team also has requests from buyers regarding the quantity needed or specific products, which I use to guide my next steps.
Mid-Morning: Meeting Buyer Requests
For the next two and a half hours, I will work on fulfilling these buyer requests. This involves finding the right product at the right price to generate sales. I use data and analytics tools to understand market behaviour, such as how often a product has been searched and sold on the platform. This data helps me determine the quantities needed to sell a product at a specific price.
During this time, my team and I are all on Gather (our team comms tool), focusing solely on supply office tasks. Post-standup, we join forces with the sales and supply teams, engaging in continuous exchanges to create sales. For instance, if a salesperson needs to reduce the price to sell, the supplier will decide but may ask about the quantity willing to be taken for that price.
Afternoon: Preparing for the Next Day
In the afternoon, my focus shifts to the next day. I repeat the morning’s tasks, but with a proactive approach to ensure everything is set for the following day. This includes checking stock reports and validating all opportunities and goals that need to be met.
Late Afternoon: Final Checks and Training
Around 3 pm, I validate all the day's opportunities and goals. If suppliers haven't responded to offers, I make end-of-day calls to assist them, offering training on how to use the products if necessary.
End of the Day: Reflecting and Planning Ahead
As the day winds down, I will reflect and plan for the week ahead. For example, if there’s a lower demand week, I’ll strategise with the sales team to find opportunities for the upcoming week. This involves negotiating with suppliers to reach desired prices and quantities.
My role as a business developer in the supply team is dynamic and multifaceted. My day is filled with supplier interactions, team collaboration, data analysis, and strategic planning, all aimed at ensuring our platform remains competitive and well-stocked. By the end of the day, I have achieved my daily goals and laid the groundwork for future successes.
